Hear that swish? That’s the Salam Stars crushing it on the court. The all-female varsity basketball team is made up of Muslim students from the Salam School, an Islamic school in Milwaukee. All the players wear hijabs and modest athletic wear. In an ideal world, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but they often face judgment based on their outfits and their religion. But these athletes ignore the haters. The Salam Stars are focused on the game. They play to win while making space for other girls to do the same.

This week I decided to post a story that is a little more amusing.

Tired of Tinder? Throwing everything you catch on PlentyOfFish right back into the dating pool? Is Hinge making you feel unhinged? Okay, we’ll stop. You probably get where we’re going by now—this is a story about finding love the old-fashioned way. Meet Willie Daly. He is a professional matchmaker in County Clare, Ireland. He’s been making matches for over 50 years, following in the steps of his father and his grandfather. When it comes to finding love, timing is everything, according to this expert. And a little drinking at the local pub can’t hurt.

This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis: https://www.genesis.com/

Motivational Monday: Do you need to be inspired? The Chicago Locals Treating Gunshot Victims

When a man who had been shot asked for her help, Journey Jamison knew exactly what to do. The teenager was able to stabilize him until paramedics arrived because she was trained in first aid by Ujimaa Medics. The community organization teaches young people who live on the South Side of Chicago everything they need to know to be first responders. The neighborhood is plagued by gun violence but lacks access to immediate healthcare—a gunshot victim could wait 15 to 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. So having heroes on the front lines who are able to help their neighbors until paramedics and doctors can take over is a critical need.

But she has to do all of this after she finishes her homework. She is just 14 years old, after all. Yip, who lives in Hong Kong, is the founder and CEO of Minor Mynas, a language learning app for kids. Yip got the idea for the company after she learned how to speak Mandarin at summer camp. Being born without lower legs didn’t keep Blake Leeper from playing baseball and basketball when he was a kid. After being fitted with prosthetic limbs, Leeper took a lot of falls, but he always got right back up. In college, he discovered running, the sport that would become his lifeblood. After winning silver and bronze medals in the Paralympic Games, Leeper is now training with one goal in mind—to compete against able-bodied athletes in the Olympics. His bid to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was denied by World Athletics, track and field’s international governing body in February 2020. The organization maintains the prosthetic blades Leeper runs on give him an unfair advantage. But Leeper hasn’t stopped there—he has filed an appeal to the committee.

Like millions of us around the world right now, Great Big Story producer Jacob is staying at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. But for Jacob, home is a houseboat outside of London, and the River Great Ouse is his backyard. Spending that much time at home, however, is making him go a bit stir crazy. So, he set a challenge for himself. Inspired by Lizzie Carr—a paddleboarder who used her sport to clean up plastic pollution in England’s waterways—Jacob took matters into his own hands and decided to try to do some good while in lockdown. His goal? Pick up 1,000 pieces of trash in one week while kayaking. He discovered a lot along the way—including lemons. So many lemons.

Mister Rogers’ taught us that when things feel scary, “look for the helpers.” Today, people all over the world are stepping up to help their fellow human beings during the COVID-19 pandemic. This one’s for them—for the doctors, nurses and paramedics risking their own lives to keep us healthy; for those in the garment industry making masks for the workers on the front lines; for the chefs, the kitchen and delivery workers making sure no one goes hungry. These are the everyday heroes showing kindness and strength when we need it the most.
